LGU-Irosin Identifies Economic Drivers

The members of the Municipal Technical Education and Skills Development Committee (MTESDC) of the local government of Irosin have identified the major drivers of the their community’s economy, have determined the current situation and drafted the strategic directions for agriculture and land transport sectors during the first part of their Municipal Skills Priorities workshop held last July 28, 2006 at the Mayor’s Office.

The primary economic drivers identified were agriculture, services (including Transport, Utilities [Electricity, Water, Gas], Personal Services, Financial Services, Tourism-Related Services) and communication (cable, calling stations, internet, landline telephone, cell sites/mobile phones). Education was also identified as a growing economic sector.

The factors used in determining the economic drivers included tax collected, number of persons employed and investment/capitalization.

After determining the economic drivers, MTESDC-Irosin began its analysis of individual economic drivers by analyzing the current situation in agriculture and land transport.

MTESDC-Irosin will continue its analysis of other economic drivers during its next meeting-workshop on August 18, 2006.

This and the subsequent activities of MTESDC-Irosin are part of the formulation of the local government’s basic TESD planning documents which will govern technical-vocational education and training (TVET) activities in the locality during the next three years.

Miss Beth Bornas, Supervising TESD Specialist, and Mr. Manny Azusano, Planning Focal, of TESDA Sorsogon Provincial Office facilitated the analysis and discussions.

After the analysis of all the economic drivers of Irosin is finished, it will be submitted to Hon. Mayor Lilia B. Gonzales who also acts as the MTESDC Chair for review.

Members of the MTESDC and resource persons who were present during the workshop were Ms. Hermine T. Sayzon (Nurse II/Municipal Health Officer Representative), Mr. Jenell P. Paghubasan (Instructor/Veritas College of Irosin Representative), Mr. Harry Garrido (Municipal Planning and Development Officer), Mr. Victor Barbaran (Irosin Tricycle Drivers and Operators Association President), Ms. Gilda Martinez (Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer), Mr. Jesus Cielo (Municipal Agriculture Officer), Mr. Rodrigo Hecita (Business Sector Representative), Mr. Jose Gil Sarte (Land Bank of the Philippines-Irosin Manager), Ms. Gloria BaƱares (Gabay sa Hinaharap ng Kababaihan, Inc. Vice-President), Mr. Edwin F. Garcia (Municipal Administrator), Mr. Felix Ortile (Municipal Budget Officer) and Ms. Jean Lopez (Rural Bank of Irosin Manager).
